Layout Research and Planning - Kirkwood Cutoff by Dave Roeder

Research and planning are important for a prototype based layout and selective compression is necessary even for a relatively short branch.  This clinic shows the planning and design effort for an 11.4 mile industrial branch.  Although this particular branch is in St. Louis, the branch and its industries are representative of similar branches almost anywhere in the US and could be modeled as a basement sized layout or selectively as a much smaller switching district at almost any time from about 1920 to today.
